Composer : Johann Adolf Hasse Conductor : William Christie Performer : Soprano, Emma Kirkby Counter Tenor, Derek Lee Ragin Cappella Coloniensis William Christie 요한 아돌프 하세 (Johann Adolf Hasse, 1699 - 1783) 하세는 매우 다작을 한 작곡가로 종교 음악을 비록하여 협주곡, 실내악, 그리고 오페라를 약 100여편 작곡하는 방대한 레파토리를 소유한 작곡가이다. 함부르그 태생이던 그가 청운의 뜻을 품고 이태리의 유학길에 올라 처음 스승으로 배운이는 흔히 카스트라토인 파리넬리의 스승이기도 한 니콜라 포르포라 였으나 그리 썩 원만한 관계를 맺지 못하였고, 곧 알레산드로 스카를라티 문하에서 배우게 되엇다... 당시 나폴리를 중심으로 유행하던 오페라 세리아에 대해 관심을 갖게 되엇으며 , 오페라는 그의 음악적인 삶의 주된 관심이자 목표가 되었다.. 당시 대본가이던 메타스타시오와 짝을 이뤄 유럽 대륙에 대표적인 오페라 세리아 작곡가로 그의 이름이 널리 드높였으나 당시 그의 명성에 비하면 오늘날 그의 이름은 다소 초라한 것이 되어 버린 격세지감이 매우 큰 작곡가가 되어 버렸다.. 어쨋거나 그는 음악가로서 자신의 삶의 중후반기에 이르러 드레스덴 궁정의 초청을 받고 드레스덴 궁정의 궁정 악장이되어 드레스덴에서 그의 인생 후반 약 30년 가량(1734-64) 을 보내게 되었다... 이 드레스덴 체류기에 작곡된 작품들 안에 그의 종교 성악 작품이 대부분 포함되어 있어 종교 음악 작곡가로서 하세의 또 다른 면모를 확연하게 드러내고 있다.. Cleofide Cleofide, like Handel's Poro, is based on Metastasio's libretto about Alexander the Great's magnanimity, but focuses more on the Indian queen Cleofide and her fidelity to her lover Poro, despite his jealousy. Cleofide was Hasse's first opera for the Saxon court; its lavish premiere in 1731 was the high point of the Dresden season. J.S. Bach, accompanied by his eldest son, traveled from Leipzig to hear it. Set during Alexander the Great's conquest of India, Cleofide explores the themes of jealousy, possessiveness (of women as well as kingdoms), and the clemency of wise rulers. Its title character -- an Indian queen -- is the faithful lover of Poro, the chronically jealous king of another region of India. Cleofide "uses feminine weapons to defend her country against Alexander, and masculine heroism to break the grip of [her lover's] jealousy" (Reinhard Strom) -- a plum role for Faustina Bordoni (mezzo soprano) who played the role of Cleofide at the premiere.
