1959년 1월 1일 인기스타 버디홀리가 이끄는 록큰롤 쇼단은 아이오와주 클리어 레이크시에서 열광의 공연을 끝냈다.그날의 공연은 새해 첫날의 휴가 기간중 열린 터여서 관객도 많았고 공연장의 열기도 대단했다. 이쇼단은 미국의 권위있는 쇼프로모터 '제너럴 아티스트 코퍼레이션'주선으로 버디홀리 중심으로 리치발렌스,더 빅 바퍼,디온 앤 벨몬츠등 당시 최고의 인기스타들로 구성된 전미국순회공연 을 목표로 장도에 올랐던 것이다.
버디는 연일 계속된 피로에지쳐 전세기를 내어 파고 시 에 도착해서 공연시간 전까지 쉬고 싶었던 것이다.비행기는 그의 밴드 '더 크리케츠'의 베이스 주자인 웨일런제닝스는 바로 옆자리에 앉기로 했다.그리고 그외 사람들은 버스로 이동 하기로 했는데 버스가 서서히 출발하고 비행기도 시동이 걸릴즈음 버스에서 내린 빅 바퍼가 웨일런에게 비행기 좌석을 양보해달라고 간곡히 부탁했다.
1958년 'Chantilly Lace''Little Red Riding Hood'등 빅 히트로 인기 절정의 빅 바퍼의 부탁을 거절하기엔 역 부족 이었다. 그는빅에게 양보하고 버스여행길에 올랐다.그러나 비행기는 이륙후 30분만에 추락해버렸고 탑승자 전원 사망 하고 말았다.구사일생으로 살아난 웨일런은 컨트리계의 최고의 인기를 누리는 가수가 되었다.
